My company and human rights, a human rights guide for small and medium-sized companies

The Rights Factory have participated in the development of a Guide entitled “My company and human rights, a human rights guide for small and medium-sized companies”, drafted by GLOBAL CSR and BBI International, and funded by the European Commission Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry. This guide, based of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, serves both as inspiration and as educational and practical reference for companies inside and outside the EU who wish to incorporate human rights more explicitly into everything they do.

CHALLENGE:

All companies from small and medium-sized enterprises to big multinational corporations have a social responsibility to respect human rights. A number of human rights guides have already been prepared for multinational companies but there are as yet few resources available for the smallest companies. In view of the fact that the vast majority of European businesses are SMEs, this guide seeks to fill this gap.

ACTION:

The European Commission invited The Rights Factory to join a group of experts from all over Europe in Business and Human Rights. We took part in a meeting held in Brussels, in which we contributed to shaping the contents of the guide via a number of co-creative dialogues with representatives of SMEs from different countries, international bodies, business associations … Finally we at The Rights Factory shared our expertise in the guide entitled “My company and human rights, a human rights guide for small and medium-sized companies”.

BENEFITS:

Identify potential impacts on human rights as early as possible and solve them before they become more serious and costly.

Improve relations with customers and the reputation as responsible brand.

Increase the job satisfaction of employees, so producing a positive impact on productivity and efficiency.

Identify innovative solutions and improvements that help companies to be stronger, more competitive and co-responsible.
